Tue, 1 December 2009 Recently my wife and I went olive picking. The olive farm belongs to a colleague of my wife. We drove up on a Friday night from Los Angeles to the town of Paso Robles. The next morning we had a big breakfast. We knew we would need lots of energy. The olive farm was ten minutes from town. About twenty people were there to harvest the olives. We were each given a bucket and a harness to attach the bucket to. Removing olives from a branch is much like milking a cow. You grasp a branch and draw your hand down. You want to remove olives without removing leaves. The olives fall right into your bucket. After three hours of work we broke for lunch. The owner provided a nice barbecue for the pickers. After lunch we picked for an additional three hours. There were scattered clouds that day with a light breeze. It was about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. We were on a hillside and the views were spectacular. Working with the other pickers was quite sociable. We were all invited to dinner that night at the owner's house. It took a solid two weeks for my elbows to feel normal again. But that was a small price to pay for a wonderful experience.

Fri, 11 September 2009 My wife and I just came back from a camping trip. We traveled over 2500 miles. We bought a new tent for the trip. We had reservations for most of the campsites. Our trip took us through the Pacific Northwest and into Canada. More specifically, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Mount Ranier was our favorite place. We set up our tent overlooking a river. We took a mountain walk through meadows filled with flowers. In another park our campsite was visited by foxes and deer. Of the cities we visited Portland, OR, was our favorite. Most of the streets are lined with trees. And the people seemed very relaxed. We took a ferry to Victoria in British Columbia. It's a lot like the U.S there, but still different. Some of the campgrounds we stayed in had hot showers. In the others we provided our own hot water. We had new folding chairs with little side tables. We could always find shade for a picnic lunch. I would estimate there are 200 to 300 campgrounds in Washington and Oregon. Whether you camp or not, it"s a great place to visit.

A business will never get ahead if it doesn't please its customers. My brother and his father-in-law get along very well. Paul doesnt get along with his supervisor. After putting the kids to bed, he finally got around to reading the paper. When are you going to get around to doing your tax return? What are we actually trying to get at in this discussion? What are you really getting at when you say I'm too kind? No matter where you hide, I'll get at you. You can get at him by writing to his wife. He tried to get at me but my friends held him back. We try to get away for two weeks in August. The police responded too slowly, so the robbers got away. He never does what he promises, but he gets away with it. How do you get away with not paying a penny in taxes? We got back from Chicago late last night. I got back my tools from my brother-in-law. I got my tools back from my brother-in-law. Paul swore he would get back at his sister for lying about him. If you make trouble for me, I'll get back at you. She got back into acting when her children got older. I wonder if I should get back into the stock market. Comments[1] |
Mon, 8 June 2009 Yesterday an Air France airplane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. It was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. There were severe storms along the flight path. Automated messages reported damage to the electrical system. Today they spotted debris and jet fuel off the coast of Brazil. The 228 people aboard are presumed to have perished. They say that flying is safer than driving. I'm sure there are statistics to support this. Still it is not what I feel in my gut. When I"m driving a car I don’t think about dying. But it’s different in a plane. The possibility of a fatal crash is something I am aware of. This doesn’t mean I am shivering from fear. The term "mindful” is a better description In any case, I continue to fly. At some point I may decide not to.

This doesn’t mean I am shivering from fear.
This isn’t to say I am quaking in my boots.
The term “mindful” is a better description.
It is more mindfulness than fear.
In any case, I continue to fly.
Regardless, I still keep getting on planes.
At some point I may decide not to. The day may come when I decide not to. Comments[9] |
Tue, 5 May 2009 Does it make sense to have students attend lectures? A lecturer can make his presentation before a camera. The lecture can be distributed live via the Internet. It can also be made available on demand. Thousands can view the lecture around the world. What is the advantage of having a live audience? Let's take this a step further. How much better is a real classroom than a virtual one? A virtual classroom can accommodate students wherever they are. If a student is speaking, everyone else can see his or her image. Is it important to actually be in the same room? Here is what the question comes down to: Except for laboratories, do we really need university buildings? By closing them, expenses can be dramatically reduced. Higher education could be made more affordable Distance learning is becoming increasingly popular. Is it time for the physical university to start shrinking?

How much better is a real classroom than a virtual one? To what extent is a real classroom superior to a virtual one? A virtual classroom can accommodate students wherever they are. Students can attend a virtual classroom no matter where they are. If a student is speaking, everyone else can see his or her image. A student speaking can be viewed by all the other students. Is it important to actually be in the same room? Does it matter whether they are in the same physical space? Here is what the question comes down to: Here is the issue in a nutshell: Except for laboratories, do we really need university buildings? With the exception of labs, are university buildings truly necessary? By closing them, expenses can be dramatically reduced. Eliminating them would result in significant cost savings. Higher education could be made more affordable More people would be able to afford a higher education. Distance learning is becoming increasingly popular. The popularity of learning over the Internet is growing. Is it time for the physical university to start shrinking? Has the time come for university campuses to contract? Comments[6] |

Mon, 9 March 2009 I can't really agree with that. I can't go along with that. I don't see quite eye-to-eye with you on this. I have a slightly different take on this issue. I have to disagree with you on that. I have to disagree with you. That's not how I see it. That's a good idea, but needs some refining. That's a good idea, but it could use some development. I beg to differ. You've made a good point, but I don't quite see it that way. I don't go along with that at all. I don't agree with that. I don't know how you can think that. That's just one way of looking at it. It's clear we don"t see this the same way. I think you're wrong. I don't believe that’s accurate. I don't believe that’s right. I think that's way off the mark. I can't believe you just said that. How can you possibly think that? How can you say that? That's simply not right. Where did you get that idea? That's the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You can't really mean that. That's just off the wall. You really believe that?
